Sinclair Ecolabel Nominated for Innovation Award

Nomination recognises the significance of a having fully compostable fresh produce label

Sinclair EcoLabel® has been nominated for a Fruit Logistica 2020 Innovation Award. “The nomination recognises the significance of a having fully compostable fresh produce label available for our customers and our industry,” according to the company.

A minimal fresh produce packaging solution, Sinclair EcoLabel is independently certified compostable by TÜV AUSTRIA under OK compost – Industrial and Seedling certification schemes. The certification also demonstrates compliance with EN13432:2000, the European packaging standard for compostable and
biodegradable packaging.

“We are all understandably delighted to be nominated for the Fruit Logistica Innovation Award 2020. Sinclair is committed to driving its sustainability programme and providing the fresh produce industry with viable and environmentally friendly label solutions. We are actively working with employees, customers and professional bodies, such as Freshfel and PMA to ensure ongoing sustainable production and to provide proven compostable labelling solutions.” Colin Woodward, CEO/President, Sinclair.

Sinclair EcoLabel Background
The development of the first Sinclair EcoLabel commenced in 2008 and was launched in 2014 with a certified compostable face stock material. The challenge, however, was still on and the next goal was to manufacture a food-safe and compostable fresh produce label that could attain certification for the full label construction – adhesive, face stock and inks.

In June 2019 the new Sinclair EcoLabel was launched with independent certification for the full construction under the OK compost and Seedling certification schemes.

In attaining OK compost – Industrial and Seedling certification, the new Sinclair EcoLabel passed four tests, heavy metal & fluorine analysis, biodegradation, disintegration and plant toxicity analysis. Successfully meeting the criteria for certification demonstrates the sustainable attributes of the Sinclair EcoLabel. The testing showed that the Sinclair Ecolabel label construction will disintegrate within 12 weeks and biodegrade within 180 days, to become part of usable soil.

“The Sinclair EcoLabel is unique as the full label construction is certified compostable. A fully certified compostable label means every component will disintegrate and biodegrade without adverse environmental impact. The development of Sinclair Ecolabel is continuing apace in 2020 with research into home composting and product life cycle analysis.” Duncan Jones, Marketing Manager
