Manufacturing

Located in North America, Earthcycle™ has manufacturing plants in Canada that adhere to strict quality control measures to ensure that all packaging products meet rigorous standards for performance and safety.

SIGNIFICANT EXPANSION

In 2021 they invested signficantly in their manufacturing capabilies to increase their thermoformed moulded fibre production capacity. The investment supports the expanding markets and global demand for Earthcycle™.

The production capacity expansion was constructed as an additional wing at CKF’s current pulp production facility in Langley, BC, Canada. They did this to take advantage of global shipping lanes accessible from their BC location and to further support the large US west coast and South American markets.

The Earthcycle™ line of packaging, from its first launch in 2005, has focused on the fresh fruit and vegetable industries and has garnered a market reputation for quality, continuous innovation and design.

Earthcycle™ Achieves Aussie Compostable Tick of Approval

Earthcycle™ have now achieved the Australian Home Compostability standard, AS 5810 (2010) for the palm fibre produce packaging range.  The packaging was tested by the recognised and accredited third-party lab, OWS N.V and proven to meet the stringent guidelines, including 90% biodegration and no toxic effect on compost.

CKF is now in the process of applying for the Australian seedling logo for its customers to display on retail packaging.

Obtaining the Australian certification for home compostability is critical for the expansion of Earthcycle™ packaging in the region, including for one of Naturpac’s clients, Fresh Berry Co Pty Ltd.

“Proof that Earthcycle meets Australian standards for home compostability sets us even further apart from competition—not only do we have a package that is 90% less plastic for our superior tasting berries and tomatoes, but we now have a package that meets stringent retailer requirements for certifications”, says John Pettinella, Product Development Director at  Fresh Berry Co.

Committment to Energy Reduction

Earthcycle™ manufacturers CFK have set a goal to reduce energy consumption by 20% by 2025, based on their 2012 usage. In 2012, their measurement was 18.18 GJ/ton of production but by 2025 they have the goal of being at 14.54 GJ/ton of production. Since 2012, CFK have reduced energy consumption per tonne of production by 10%. This is an annual energy reduction of 88,514 gigajoules, which is the equivalent to the amount of energy used to supply electricity to 1,000 homes for an entire year. Pretty impressive!

All Products Recyclable or Compostable

CFK set a goal several years ago to transform their entire product offering to entirely recyclable or compostable products. They have now achieved that goal! All substrates produced (Molded Fiber, PET and Polystyrene) are fully recyclable or compostable!

Reducing Waste Diversion

CKF is on the move to zero waste! In the last several years, they have been able to capture more waste items, such as organics, plastics and wood and divert the materials away from the landfill.

Between 2014 and 2023, they increased waste diversion by 500% to, approximately, 1920 metric tonnes. This constitutes diversion of
approximately 38% of their total waste to landfill generated. They have set
a pretty audacious goal of 50% diversion by 2025. If only all businesses could have the aspirations of CFK!

Earthcycle™ is committed to promoting sustainability through every aspect of their operations.

One of the key features of Earthcycle™ packaging is its compostability. Designed to break down naturally, Earthcycle™ products can be composted in both home and industrial settings, returning valuable nutrients to the soil and reducing landfill waste. This makes Earthcycle™ an excellent choice for growers, farmers, packhouses and retailers looking to enhance their sustainability credentials.

In addition to being compostable, Earthcycle™ packaging is also recyclable. This dual capability provides flexibility for end-of-life disposal, ensuring that the packaging can be managed in an environmentally responsible manner. By offering recyclable and compostable options, Earthcycle™ helps to reduce the reliance on traditional plastic packaging and mitigate its environmental impact.
