Finally, the Solution to Keep 1 Billion Single-use Coffee Cups from Australian Landfill

October 13th, 2020: Melbourne-based specialty coffee roaster, Jasper Coffee, launches Australia’s first plastic free single use coffee cup and lid – just as COVID forced us all to shelve our reusable coffee cups. Now, Australian businesses and consumers have a 100 percent sustainable option for their takeaway coffees.

A socially responsible Global citizen, Jasper Coffee is certified B Corp, Organic, Carbon Neutral and Fair Trade. The introduction of the plastic free coffee cup is a natural progression in Jasper Coffee’s sustainable journey, who has showcased its environmental business ethos by actively seeking out planet bettering alternatives as technology evolves.

“ As an Australian owned business, we are conscious of the fragile thin layer of soil we have on our continent and the need to keep the soil healthy in order to provide healthy food for healthy people. The quality of soil, air, water and viability of people are the essence of this sustainability. That is why we have consciously considered these aspects in our business. “We have advanced fairtrade, organic coffees, and produced compostable packaging, became Carbon Neutral and embedded governance of the ethics of running our business by being certified B Corp”.  Says Jasper Coffee founder, Wells Trenfield.

“This is why we have waited till compostable capsule material was available. This is why Jasper Coffee is first to release the plastic free cups and lids. This journey for us, is about re-humanising the coffee supply chain… because we have sustained our care and impacted people for 30 years in business”.

After extensive research into the recycling process of takeaway coffee cups and the use of PE lining, Jasper Coffee set themselves the task of seeking out an alternative material that was 100 percent recyclable, compostable and plastic free.

In stark comparison to coffee cups lined with PE, Jasper Coffee’s new 100 percent plastic free cup and lid will decompose in domestic and industrial facilities over just 105 days. It has also been specially designed to be recycled along with normal paper and cardboard waste up to seven times before eventually making its way to landfill, bringing a whole new meaning to ‘reusable’.

Finland based Kotkamills, produced a patented water-based dispersion coated barrier cardboard. This creates a water impervious inner layer, without changing the taste of the coffee. They then consulted with their Indonesian-based manufacturer, Glopac, and Melbourne distributor, Aberdeen Paper, over the course of 18 months to bring the finished cup to Australian shores.

“Jasper Coffee has had a long standing partnership with Aberdeen cup suppliers spanning from the mid 90s. This is a relationship where each party recognises the needs of business through reciprocal trust and honesty and sharing of the costs and rewards over the journey. In turn, Aberdeen has entrusted Alan Knights from Glopac of Indonesia as our cup manufacturer. This is because they integrate in the socially responsible way they treat their workers and the sustainability of the environment” Mr Trenfield explains.

“This relationship extends further back in the production chain, to Kotkamills, who have provided diligent research into producing a new plastic free raw material that is from environmentally sustainable forest management and from the integrity of operating a business with respect for people and the planet. We are all aligned”

Founder Wells Trenfield reveals “Due to this long-term relationship, Aberdeen and Glopac naturally chose Jasper Coffee to represent the launch of this game changing product. Jasper Coffee aligns closely with the need to run a business with social responsibility as a core value and demonstrable in the many projects that have helped raise the standards of living for many coffee producers and their families”

Launching in 8 coffee shops* across Victoria and Queensland, Jasper Coffee’s 100 percent plastic free takeaway coffee cups are a huge step in the right direction to reduce the 2.7 million disposable coffee cups going to Australian landfills every day.
